Microchipping is a simple, low-cost procedure that gives an animal a permanent, scannable identity. It is the foundation that makes reunification possible — without it, a lost animal has no reliable path back to its owner.
Permanent identification
Unlike collars and tags, a microchip cannot fall off, be removed, or fade. It stays with the animal for life.

Which animals can be microchipped?
Microchipping is not just for dogs and cats. Advances in chip size and implant technique mean virtually any animal can now be identified — from horses and livestock to parrots, rabbits, reptiles, and fish. If you are unsure whether a particular species or chip type is suitable, your vet can advise.
Is it painful?
The implant is delivered via a sterile needle — similar in feel to a standard vaccination. Most animals show no reaction at all. No anaesthetic is required, and the procedure is complete in under a minute.
How it works
The chip itself is passive — it has no battery and emits no signal. When a compatible scanner passes over it, the chip responds with a unique identification number. That number is then looked up in a registry to identify the owner.

A vet or trained professional implants the chip
The microchip — roughly the size of a grain of rice — is injected under the skin, typically between the shoulder blades. The procedure takes seconds and is no more uncomfortable than a routine vaccination.

The chip is scanned to confirm placement
The vet passes a compatible scanner over the site to verify the chip is reading correctly and that the number matches the documentation. Different chip standards require different scanner frequencies — your vet will use the right one.

The number is registered in a database
The chip number alone is useless without a registry entry linking it to an owner. Register on reunifIDe to make your animal findable from anywhere.

Keep your details up to date
If you move house or change your phone number, update your registry record. An outdated entry is as unhelpful as no entry at all.

How microchip lookup works
Standard implanted pet microchips use RFID technology that cannot be read by a smartphone camera or NFC reader.
To look up a microchip, you need the number as displayed by a compatible scanner — available at veterinary clinics, animal shelters, and animal control services.
